The client came to Uptown with only a venue in mind and the desire to create a great birthday party for their 14 year-old-to-be daughter. They wanted to keep the event suitably ‘grown up’ and elegant, with all the fun that every 14 year old deserves! As the birthday girl was a big fan of afternoon tea – we decided to plan a vintage tea party in the park.
The venue was a private park, open to residents only, near to Regents Park. The space was beautifully maintained and offered wide open spaces with areas sheltered by vegetation. The event area gave us a great blank canvas in which to create!
As an event planner, you inherently control every aspect of the party from start to finish. However a party in a park left one very important element unable to be planned – the infamous English weather! Fortunately Mother Nature was on our side and so with all Plan B’s cast aside, we set out on a beautifully sunny day to set up for what promised to be a brilliant party.
Whilst beautifully green and luscious, grass doesn’t make for the most comfortable of all seating. We opted for some sky blue giant beanbags and the classic summer-style striped deck chairs which we laid out in a sociable circle.
Next came the entertainment and to make the most of the outdoor venue, we sourced a selection of giant garden games. With Jenga, Buzz wire, Croquet and an enormous Kerplunk at the ready, the girls were spoilt for choice… game faces ready.
Last, but certainly not least, where would any good tea party be without a traditional afternoon tea? Cue a selection of finger sandwiches, home-made cakes, and of course scones (with a selection of jams and clotted cream, naturally). All food was served on authentic vintage tiered plates and laid out on tea-shop style tablecloths. There was also a wide and wonderful selection of teas: fruit based, herbal, English breakfast, we had it all! And for those who are partial to a cold drink on a very hot day, we had some lovely elderflower and raspberry flavoured juices.
Throw in some gorgeous vintage bunting, a few picnic rugs and mason jars of virgin Mojito to kick it all off, and you’ve got yourself one hell of an afternoon tea party!
